Financial Services Technical Assessment

The new CIO at Royal & SunAlliance (R&SA) has a mandate to improve productivity, quality of work, and re-establish credibility with the business. Intelliware was engaged to provide an assessment of the current IT development environment for all of its Web applications, analyzing both the application architecture and the application development practices and processes. Intelliware conducted the assessment by reviewing R&SA’s project documentation, technical practices, environment, tools, and source code as well as through interviews with staff. We then analyzed them all against ours and the industry’s best practices producing a document outlining the strengths of existing practices and applications, gaps to best practices, and recommended improvements with concrete steps for moving forward. This document was used as part of the overall strategic plan to reshape R&SA’s IT organization to allow for higher quality results in shorter timeframes under the premise of better, faster, cheaper technology solutions for the business.

After the assessment was published, Intelliware was further engaged by R&SA for a Proof of Concept (POC) exercise to demonstrate that our recommendations would truly deliver business value. The POC would further help R&SA’s senior IT management to evaluate whether the recommendations outlined in the assessment document would be viable within the R&SA IT environment. At the conclusion of the six week POC, R&SA senior IT management considered the recommendations as both practical and highly beneficial to the business. These recommendations have now been adopted as development standards.
