Agri-food Premises Registry

OnTrace is an industry-led, not-for-profit corporation with a mandate to advance food traceability in Ontario as part of a wider national agri-food system. The goal of OnTrace is to use education, research and technology to become the hub for agriculture and agri-food traceability information systems and management solutions in Ontario.

OnTrace needed to create a system capable of tracking all food items through every process “From Farm Gate to Dinner Plate” tm. Intelliware was retained to assist with strategic planning, policy development and the creation of a technical roadmap to accomplish the organization’s mandate. The roadmap deliverable recommended a staged approach with the first phase creating the Ontario Agri-food Premises Registry (OAPR). The OAPR is a repository for the physical location of all agriculture and agri-food premises in Ontario and issues a unique premise ID for each. The OAPR was undertaken in two stages – a Proof of Concept over a period of 3 months followed by the creation of the full production version. The OAPR is the first deliverable in a comprehensive, multi stage plan that will ultimately integrate all aspects of full chain food traceability. As the OAPR was creating a solution where none existed, the business model and requirements were constantly emerging and changing.  Intelliware very successfully used its i-Proving approach to mitigate the risks of this changing environment by actively helping the business prioritize the next functional deliverable. Intelliware applied a variety of open source products to meet the project deliverables on time and under budget.
