Intelliware delivers a modern mobile pay experience for credit union members.
Cambrian Credit Union is an innovative provider of a full suite of financial services, from mortgages and savings to insurance and investment advice. Cambrian has over 250 employees and serves 62,000 individual and commercial members through 11 branches in Winnipeg and Selkirk, Manitoba, as well as a virtual savings division. It holds more than $3.5 billion in assets.
Libro Credit Union, the largest credit union in southwestern Ontario, provides its members with high-quality financial coaching and profit-sharing opportunities. Libro’s 31 branches, national network of 4,000+ ATMs, and convenient access to online, telephone, and mobile banking services ensure members always have easy access to great service.
Libro and Cambrian, separate financial institutions, wanted to work together to bring an innovative mobile pay solution to market. They needed to provide members with a fast, easy, and secure way to use their mobile Android device to make debit purchases at any retailer where Interac Flash® is accepted.
Their requirements were similar, and each was willing to accommodate a design that would work for both companies. They also recognized that a collaborative effort would lead to a better solution for their customers, at a lower cost. After researching firms that could help them achieve their goals, Libro and Cambrian selected Intelliware as their partner to deliver a solution.
Intelliware conducted discovery to identify a technical strategy, produce a design for mobile payment, and create an actionable plan for bringing the product to market quickly and effectively. Intelliware’s discovery process:
- Provided clarity on the current business and technical objectives for each credit union
- Identified the required features, including possible points of variation
- Recommended a design for the high-level architecture
- Delivered a UX/UI that gave each credit union its own branding and elements
- Produced an actionable plan for the delivery of mobile pay

The Mobile Pay solution was delivered as a common library that could be configured, branded, and integrated into each credit union’s mobile banking application. The Mobile Pay Common Library was delivered over a series of iterative and incremental builds, following the Intelliware Way. A high degree of collaboration throughout the initiative allowed all the stakeholders to leverage best practices and stay flexible on the project requirements.
Mobile Payment Common Library
Mobile Payment Registration allows members to register with their credit union for Mobile Pay. After registration, a short tutorial explains how Mobile Pay works, the functionality activates on the member’s phone, and the Interac Flash™ network access enables use.
Mobile Pay Settings allow members to set up and change their Mobile Pay configuration: for example, selecting a different payment account, turning on/off “Always use passcode” or “Always on” functionality, and changing how mobile payment icons appear. Members can also change or reset their payment passcode, revisit the tutorial, and remove the functionality from their phone.
Mobile Pay is ready for use after registration. Members make payments or receive refunds by holding their NFC-enabled Android device to the retailer’s point-of-sale terminal. A passcode is required for a single transaction over $100, or for multiple transactions totaling more than $200 in a day.
Security Features such as second-level authentication, payment passcode, validation of the device and secure, encrypted communications are built into Mobile Pay.
Guidance is provided to members to ensure that phone settings for NFC, Tap & Pay and Wi-Fi are compatible with Mobile Pay.
Error and Warning screens are shown to members each time there is an issue with Mobile Pay. If an error requires credit union support for resolution, the error screen includes a button to initiate a phone call to the credit union for immediate support.
Branding, Theming and Configuration are managed by each credit union to allow for tailoring of colours, logos, icons, font and content. Credit unions can configure the specific behaviour of several features as well.
The Mobile Pay Common Library was successfully delivered and integrated into each of Libro and Cambrian’s mobile banking applications and was successfully certified for use with Interac Flash™. Libro and Cambrian mobile banking apps with Mobile Pay can be downloaded from Google Play™. Mobile Pay is fast, easy to use and secure, allowing credit union members to make payments and receive refunds through their Android mobile device.
