Intelliware Development Inc., a custom software development company, was engaged by Bedside Clinical Systems (BCS) to assist with the development of their existing Bedside Paediatric Early Warning System.

The Bedside Paediatric Early Warning System (BedsidePEWS) is a US Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approved clinical algorithm built by doctors, nurses and respiratory therapists. The system is designed to augment existing expertise and provide a safety net for children admitted to hospital wards who are clinically deteriorating. BedsidePEWS is comprised of 4 components: (1) an expert derived, multi-centre validated severity of illness score, (2) an inter-professionally developed documentation record into which the severity of illness score is embedded, (3) a series of score-matched care recommendations based on the opinions of over 280 paediatric health care professionals, and (4) an educator-developed education-implementation program.

BCS required a technology partner to help them: (1) update e-BedsidePEWS, the digital version of BedsidePEWS, to create a scalable, easy-to-use and production-ready software application, and (2) assist with the development of new functionality that allows clinicians to electronically record patient observations into the documentation record and consolidate those clinical impressions into a single number.

“It’s not always easy to find a development partner who understands your business and is knowledgeable in the healthcare space. Intelliware was chosen as a preferred technology company based on their exceptional 30-year track record in software delivery, as well their experience building healthcare applications and integrations with existing systems.” said Dr. Chris Parsharam, BCS, Chief Scientific Officer.

As a technology partner, Intelliware provided guidance on architecture, technology and on-going operations, as well as hands-on development of the solution. “Intelliware was able to deliver an application that is easy to use and fully integrated into hospital processes and information systems for easy access and sharing of relevant information between systems” said Parshuram.

“It is our continued focus to assist organizations like Bedside Clinical Systems develop world class systems and get them to market.  We’re thrilled to have assisted with the development of e-BedsidePEWS and see this system making a difference in hospitals.” said Andrew Pitt, Senior Vice President, Delivery at Intelliware Development.
